History of the Youth Against War Treaty

ICBL Youth Ambassador Song Kosal and Canadian youth Lindsay Wilcox publicly launched the People’s Treaty during the December 1997 Ottawa Conference. They encouraged citizens to sign the People’s Treaty, which urged governments to live up to their obligations under the Mine Ban Treaty. In
1998 Song Kosal launched the Youth Against War Treaty in conjunction with Mines Action Canada. Youth around the world collected almost a quarter of a million petition signatures, calling on the United States to join the Mine Ban Treaty. The signatures were delivered to the United States government in
March 2001.

Why is India the new target?

India has been chosen as the new Youth Against War Treaty target country. It has used mines in the past and continues to use mines along its border with Pakistan. This powerful South Asian country has the capacity to send a strong message to its neighbors in South Asia and indeed throughout the
world by joining the Mine Ban Treaty. The ICBL has prioritized working to achieve universalization of the Mine Ban Treaty in South Asia by 2004. Join the ICBL and Mines Action Canada! Add your voice to the thousands of youth worldwide who are urging India to join the Mine Ban Treaty!
