Landmine Incident Report, 25 January 2002.

5 Children have been injured in an anti personal mine explosion near a cemetery in village Bhabi Kheel, Tehsil Ghalanai, Mohmand Agency, federally Administered Tribal Area of Pakistan. They pick the mine form the land, which was hidden, and playing with it, in the meanwhile it was explode and injured all of them.

The details of the victims are as follows:

1. Dastar Mohamad Nazir, 10 years old, male
2. Ijaz Rokhan, 9 years old, male
3. Noor Lal Wakil Umer, 11 years old, male
4. Shad Ali Bakhti Gul, 10 years old, male
5. Shaukat Abdul Matin, 9 years old, male

All the victim children were rushed to Agency Head Quarter Hospital at Ghalani, Mohmand Agency for necessary treatment.

This is the second incident of landmine in FATA since January 01, 2002. Most of incidents in FATA remains unreported because of the limited access of media to the area.

FATA is contaminated by Landmines since the outbreak of Afghan war against the Russian intervention in Afghanistan in the late seventies, early eighties. HSD is addressing the issue of landmine in Bajaur Agency one of the six contaminated districts of FATA and is busy in Basic Mine Awareness, Household survey, Emergency Evacuation and Rehabilitation of landmine victims since August 2000. It has identified more then 660 victims in only Bajaur Agency so far. The numbers of victims are in thousand in only Bajaur.
