A 12-year-old boy was killed Sunday when he stepped on a land mine while tending cattle near Pakistan's tense border with India in Kashmir, police said.

Mohammed Ibrar died near his home in Kathua, a town in the Pakistan-controlled area of Kashmir, said Yasin Qureshi, a town policeman. Kathua is 200 miles (320 kilometers) east of Islamabad.

"The boy was killed on the spot," Qureshi said.

It's second time in five weeks that civilians in Pakistan have been killed by land mines near the country's heavily fortified border with India.

On June 21, two youths returning home from visiting relatives were killed in Punjab province when their car ran over a land mine planted by the Pakistani army.

Pakistan and India have massed troops and weapons along their shared border in a dispute centering on control of Kashmir, a remote Himalayan region.

I am doing a political speech in my English class on why landmines should be banned. If you have any information besides that which is on your site, please send it to me.
