3 December 2002 Archived Entry: "Poem Competition to be held in Nepal on 1 March 2003"

Currently Nepal is suffering a cataclysmic situation. Mines which was once an esoteric issue has now transformed into a very flagrant subject. Frequent detonation of mines victimizing innocent peoples has created a perplexity among all people. And among the victims youth make up the highest percentage. Youths as we know are the ultimate force that can shape up a whole New World and this ultimate force if destroyed the future is sure to be in chaos. This is sure a severe problem and everyone should help it be solved.

But first comes first, prevention is better than cure. Avoiding accident is the most important point. So to help young people know about the menace of mines and help preclude the hazards we 'Youth For Peace (NCBL)' have decided to organize an inter-school poem competition targeting grades 7, 8 and 9 on topic ' Youth against Landmines'.

This competition will be held on March 1, 2003 as on 'Treaty into force day'.

This is a very small effort but we expect that it would enhance mine awareness among youths and lessen fear from this intimidating situation. Also we expect this competition would raise appeal to the govt. sign the Ottawa treaty. This competition also targets on raising appeal to Maoist to stop using Landmines.

Though we may not solve the problem we sure can make a difference.

Landmines are so horrible. Please ask your parents to call your congresspeople about this. We MUST stand together and convince the American government to sign the treaty which promises to destroy all landmines in our possession and to never use them again in war. <
