24 January 2003 Archived Entry: "Indian Artist Creates a Poster Worth a Thousand Words"

Guarav Sarin is a 26-year-old artist living in India and this is his message:

I have experienced 26 years in a free country. I have gone through the assassinations of two Prime Ministers, scores of riots, fundamentalism, blood in the campus, roads, dams, mobile phones, microprocessors, Pizza Hut and underemployment.

The poster just happened.

I was looking at the picture and the look on the girl's face was so questioning that it evoked in me the feeling I had to communicate. I tried to find a cause that could answer the questions in her eyes, it was a very personal visualisation.

I think the question is towards the whole of humanity; Why should we continue to have offspring which we can not protect and nurture and to whom we may not even be able to provide a breath of fresh air in the future?

The landmine issue came to me as an means of communicating this idea, I never started with it, but that's where I was lead.

I do wonder, maybe we can tell the children that the World Wars were a Fairytale. Tell them it is a peaceful planet and before they can find out, hide and destroy all the weapons, end the rivalries and rage between people. Move all of these ideas away from their reach, our reach, and the reach of the human mind. But we cling tightly to these toys.

Thank you and best regards,

Gaurav Sarin

Dear Gauarav Sarin,
Your poster touched my heart.This
comment is from a Pakistani who
knows very well what this landmine
really is and how it disfigures and
discolours the human living poster.
Let us pray that the children on
either sldes of our borders be safe
and play happily.

Gaurav your poem is bieutiful and yet so sad. As youth we must not allow ourselves to become weakened by this sadness, but instead have it strengthen our motivation for action. The difficult situations we live in today are man-made they are not a product of God or fate. We can work together to change the future to leave the next generations of youth a better world to live in. It is in our hands - thank you for your inspiration!
