23 June 2003 Archived Entry: "ACTION: Cool petition signature collection tip!"

Have you ever wondered if it's possible to collect petition signatures by email? If you have, here's the answer the ICBL Webmaster has for you...

E-mail signatures - never never never! Sending a message around asking people to sign their name and then forward on the email creates a chain letter, and, believe it or not, chain letters are illegal. For more information please visit http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/weekly/aa052798.htm

If you're tempted to collect signatures via email their IS an easy solution. Let's use the Youth Against War Treaty as an example.

Sample email:

Dear friends and family,

I'm collecting signatures for the Youth Against War Treaty and hope you'll sign this petition online at:
http://www.icbl.org/youth/yaw/. The Treaty states:

We want no more war

We want no more mines

We want no more new mine victims

We promise to work for peace in our world.

If you're 24 years old or younger please sign this petition! All collected signatures will be handed over to the governments of India and Pakistan on 9 September 2003, urging both countries to stop using mines, provide assistance to mine survivors, clear all their minefields and join the Mine Ban Treaty!

Thanks for your support!

All you need to do is send an email explaining what you're collecting signatures for and a link to where people can sign online! If you have other creative ideas about how to collect petition signatures please share them!
