Landmine Monitor
The ICBL started
Landmine Monitor in 1998. It was created to provide accurate information,
document progress, and monitor implementation of the Mine Ban Treaty.
Each year over 100 researchers carry out research in every country in the
world. They interview government officials, deminers, campaigners, read through
newspaper reports and other documents and conduct Internet searches. Their
research results are published in the annual Landmine Monitor report.
Landmine Monitor contains detailed information on every country in the world
with regard to landmine use, production, stockpiling, trade, humanitarian
demining, mine awareness education, and mine survivor assistance. It is the best
and most updated source of information on the landmines issue and is used by the
ICBL, other NGOs, teachers, students, governments, and others worldwide.
In addition to country reports, Landmine Monitor also includes a copy of the
Mine Ban Treaty, and information about the ICBL, a variety of thematic issues
such as the environmental impact of landmines, and information about mine action
programs operated by governments and international organizations. Landmine
Monitor is available in book, CD ROM and web formats.
Also available is The Landmine Monitor Executive Summary, which provides an
overview of the landmines issue and discusses changes that have occurred in the
past year.

Using Landmine Monitor as a Research Tool
The three different formats are very easy to use. The index divides the
information into regions- Africa, Americas, Asia- Pacific, Europe/ Central Asia
and Middle East/ North Africa. Within each region countries are divided into
States Parties, Signatories and Non-Signatories. Countries are listed
alphabetically within these categories.
The Landmine Monitor Report is currently only available in English. The
Executive Summary is available in English, French, Portuguese, Russian and
Spanish. The website has many full-length country reports available in Arabic,
French, Portugese, Russian and Spanish.
The Landmine Monitor website contains all Landmine Monitor Reports, executive
summaries, fact sheets and translated documents when available.
Landmine Monitor
Online Database
Are you looking for specific information related to landmines for a
presentation or school project? Look no further than the Landmine Monitor Online Database. Search by
theme, keyword, country or regional fora to find the information from
Landmine Monitor reports that you need.
For example, let's say that you are doing a report on the landmine situation
in Colombia and you want to find out how many people have been injured or killed
by landmines in Colombia. Go to www.lm-online.org and from the front page,
click to search the "Landmine Victim/ Survivor Assistance" information. Then
select the region you would like to search, in this case, "Americas." Select
"Americas" and then click "Search Now."
When the results appear, scroll down and click on the "Landmine and UXO
Casualties" table and text. Then scroll down to "Colombia." Look at the
information about Colombia available in the table. For the victim/ survivor
information click on "Colombia." All information about mine casualties in
Colombia will then appear. Voila! That's it. The directions may seem a little
complicated but the database is actually very easy to use. If you have questions
about the database please contact macelina@web.ca
